Fundraising and the Head of School
Success in fundraising involves engagement with alums, parents, and other supporters, and a close and trusting relationship with the Director of Development at the school.
Philanthropy is a critical element of an independent school’s financial health, which means that fundraising is an important part of an independent school head’s role. Often, becoming a head of school represents the individual’s first significant experience in this challenging space.
Philanthropy is voluntary and fundraising is competitive. Most donors are approached to contribute to many causes, including other educational institutions. Raising money from individuals is not like submitting a grant proposal. It is normally far more bespoke. Success in fundraising involves engagement with alums, parents, and other supporters, and a close and trusting relationship with the Director of Development at the school.
At SSL, we can help schools enhance fundraising by:
- Working individually with the school head on their role in fundraising – close listening to donors, generating enthusiasm and alignment around strategic goals, compelling representation of the school, understanding that fundraising is a process that can require patience.
- Working with the advancement team on issues of fundraising strategy.
- Discussion with the board on fundraising practice and, importantly, their roles as donors and volunteers.
Ideally the Head can come to experience fundraising as an intellectually interesting part of the job, a study in human motivation, and an opportunity to create mutually satisfying relationships between the school and its supporters.
