In a time when the pace and complexity of change continue to accelerate, schools must be more intentional than ever about aligning their mission with the realities of a rapidly evolving world. Strategic planning, when done well, provides the opportunity to clarify institutional priorities and strengthen the shared sense of purpose, expressed in a clear, authentic, and compelling mission, that sustains a school community. At Strategic School Leadership, we view strategic planning as both a disciplined process of analysis and a powerful exercise in community engagement. Our goal is to help schools develop plans that honor their founding values while positioning them to adapt and flourish in the years ahead.
Our work is grounded in decades of experience as former heads of successful independent schools. We understand the complex ecosystem in which school leaders operate—balancing mission, finances, governance, faculty culture, and the evolving expectations of families. For that reason, we do not employ a standard planning template. Each engagement begins with a period of deep listening and institutional learning. We immerse ourselves in the school’s history, mission, culture, and current realities, while building the trust and shared understanding necessary for meaningful strategic work. This early phase—often overlooked in traditional planning processes—is essential. It allows the eventual plan to emerge from the school’s authentic strengths and convictions rather than from a generic framework.
As licensed practitioners of the Return on Character Leadership Assessment, we also recognize that strategic planning is shaped by the character and leadership style of those guiding the institution. Heads of school and trustees bring to the process their own experiences, values, and formative moments. For this reason, we often begin by inviting members of the planning steering committee to reflect on the personal and professional experiences that shape how they lead and make decisions. This reflection helps establish trust, deepen mutual understanding, and create a strong foundation for collaborative work.
While every school’s journey is different, our planning processes typically include the following core phases:
- Clarity of Purpose and Objectives – meeting with board leadership and the head of school to develop a clear and shared understanding of the scope of the process and its objectives
- Preparation and Institutional Learning – reviewing past plans, data, and institutional history
- Research and Environmental Scanning – examining trends in education, demographics, and the competitive landscape
- Mission Review – this may result in affirmation of the current mission or a significant revision
- Stakeholder Engagement – gathering input from trustees, faculty, staff, students, parents, and alumni
- Analysis and Strategic Priorities – identifying key themes and opportunities
- Drafting and Board Review – supporting the school’s writing of actionable goals and ensuring alignment with resources
- Communication and Implementation Planning – establishing clear metrics and systems for accountability
Throughout the process, we work closely with school leadership and the board to ensure that the final plan is both aspirational and achievable—a roadmap that can guide decisions and resource allocation for years to come. As Jim Collins and Morten Hansen remind us in Great by Choice, strong organizations understand the difference between core values, which endure, and strategies, which must continually evolve. Strategic planning at its best helps schools do exactly that: remain faithful to their mission while adapting thoughtfully to a changing world.
